Accrediting Carolyn Bognar and Martha Hill as his mentors, Henning Rubsam is a choreographer since 1984 and the Artistic Director
of New York City-based dance company SENSEDANCE since 1992. He has created over sixty dances that have been performed in Australia,
New Zealand, Central and South America, and throughout Europe as well as the United States.
Recent ensemble works include BRAHMS "Double
Concerto" and "DJANGO" - a suite of dances to music by legendary jazz guitarist Django Reinhardt, "MERCILESS BEAUTY" juxtaposing music
by Bach and ontemporary art songs by Leslie Wildman, as well as "Garden" set to traditional Iraqi music and the newly commissioned?
"DINNER IS WEST" to original music by Beata Moon. The Village Voice and New York Times described these worksas both "exquisite" and
"glorious".
Mr. Rubsam also choreographs for opera and theater, including Outer Critics Circle Award winner Lanie Robertson?'s Off-Broadway
production "Cannibal's Waltz". Rubsam was the subject of television documentaries in both the U.S. and his native Germany and DANCEVISTA
produced three TV specials on his work. Filmmaker Simone Wiest's full-length documentary feature ?"Behind the Curtain,"? premiered
in 2006 and also features NYCB principals Nikolaj Hubbe andWendy Whelan.
Transferring from The Hamburg Opera Ballet School in his native
Germany, to attend and later graduate from The Juilliard School, Mr. Rubsam joined the Juilliard School Evening Division faculty in
fall 2006. Among Mr. Rubsam's teaching credits are NYU's School of Education, Lewis-Clarke State College, Hunter College, Richard
Stockton State College, Emory University in Atlanta, Marameo Studios in Berlin, the University of Idaho in Moscow, Washington State
University, UC Berkeley in California, ODC in San Francisco, Keshet Dance Company in Albuquerque, theLimon Institute at Peridance
in New York City and NYC's La Guardia High School for Performing Arts (the "Fame" school), UNITEC in Auckland - New Zealand,
Ballet Moderno de Guatemala, Tanzcompagnie Giessen, Ballett Kaiserslautern, Ballet Arts in NYC and at Ballett Kassel in Germany.
Rubsam
has been awarded government, foundation andcorporate grants as well as the Alfried Krupp von Bohlen- und Halbach Prize, the Lincoln
Center Fellowship, the DRA Award, and the Emerging
Choreographer Award from Stephens College, MO, among many others.
The past three
years Mr. Rubsam has worked with guestdancers of the furloughed Dance Theatre of Harlem, adding pointe work to his eclectic repertoire.
